“Kinzeman in Space” High Altitude Balloon Launch

Kinzeman will be launched past the edge of outer space

On Saturday, July 12, as part of Kinze’s Family Fun Day, Kinze engineers and the Williamsburg High School Robotics team will launch a high-altitude balloon to reach an altitude of 105,000 feet above sea level, three times higher than an airliner and past the edge of outer space.

The balloon will be assembled inside the Kinze Innovation Center (KIC) in the wash bay area at 8:30 a.m. and will be released outside on the south side of the KIC at 9:30 a.m.

High-altitude ballooning (HAB) has become a popular hobby due to the low-cost of GPS and communications equipment. However, it is not easy, as it requires technical skills and an adventurous spirit. The 3-pound capsule can resist temperatures approaching -60F. On-board electronics include 2 cameras, 1 GPS satellite transponder, a GPS tracker, temperature-pressure sensors and a recording device. It will take several hours for the balloon to rise and for the capsule to return by parachute.

On the day of the event, the Williamsburg High School Robotics team members will:

• design and build the high-altitude ballooning capsule

• predict balloon trajectory based on their balloon size and weight and weather conditions

• track the balloon and retrieve capsule

• organize photos, video, GPS mapping.
