Carol’s Quilting World at EV History Center

The making of quilts began long before European settlers arrived in the New World. People in nearly every part of the world had used padded fabrics for clothing, bedding, and even armor. With the arrival of the English and Dutch settlers in North America, quilting took on a new life and flourished.

            The quilting world of Carol Hodgden, in her mid-eighties, has changed profoundly. It is now a world of not only traditional quilts but also “art quilts,” and her work has changed from making traditional bed quilts to becoming an “art quilter.”

            In the past few years, this well-known quilter from Marion, has had four quilts juried in national shows, and one quilt was included in the Art Engagement Calendar published by the American Quilters Society. The Ohnward Fine Arts Center at Maquoketa hosted a two-month display of her quilts in 2009.
