Chuck and Irene Cassens named Grand Marshals

Chuck and Irene Cassens of Sigourney have been announced as the Grand Marshals of the 4th of July Parade this year.

The couple married on July 31, 1955. Chuck is a lifelong resident of Sigourney, while Irene is originally from Hedrick. They had four children together-Janice Brown, James Cassens, Jean-Anne Crevelt, and Joy Sanner-eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, with another on the way in August.

Chuck is a veteran of the Korean War and was able to go on an honor flight out to Washington D.C. for a tour of the war memorials and monuments. Irene has taken part in bowling and golf, and water sports.

In there spare time, Chuck and Irene like to enjoy time with their family, feeding the fish at a nearby pond, and took part in water sports for years. They taught family and friends how to water-ski on trip to the Mississippi River. They also enjoy heading down to the Florida Keys, which they hope to do this coming winter.

The Cassens have owned Cassens’ Mill since purchasing it in 1964, developing onto the original building. Cassens’ Mill is one of the longest running businesses in the area, and also has a second location a mile out of Sigourney. The grain mill will be auctioned off to Key Co-op on July 1st.

Sigourney Area Development Corporation and a city committee chose the couple out of list of five potential nominations to lead the parade.

“They are a hardworking family and have supported the community for many years,” Judy Frank of Sigourney Area Development Corporation said.

Sigourney’s 4th of July Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Sigourney Elementary School.
