City of Sigourney considering no spring clean up days this year

After several years of declining participation and other issues, the City of Sigourney has begun discussing the possibility of canceling their annual spring clean up days this year during their meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Normally taking place during the third or fourth week of April, the spring clean up days allows homeowners to put out their unwanted wood, electronics, metal, appliances and more on their lawns over the course of that week. However, according to City Maintenance Manage Don Northup, participation has been declining over the last three years, and several cases of items being stolen off people’s driveways before pickup have been reported.

“The good stuff is already gone because people pick through it the night before,” Northup said during the meeting. “People would pay their money and their items wouldn’t be there. We don’t get many e-goods. I just don’t know if we want to continue this. We have someone out there for pickup and wasting gas because there’s nothing to pickup.”
