Deficits Just Too Much for the Savages

12-10-2013 Sigourney 38, Montezuma 55
12-13-2013 Sigourney 49, North Mahaska 59

A double-digit second half deficit isn’t an ideal scenario for any team. Last week the Sigourney boys’ basketball team was faced with a pair of said scenarios and wasn’t able to overcome the deficit either time. The Savages went on the road for the first time on Tuesday and fell at Montezuma, 55-38, and were then defeated by North Mahaska on Friday, 59-49. The two losses drop Sigourney’s record to 1-3 with four road games coming this week.

Despite settling in defensively in the fourth quarter against Montezuma on Tuesday, Sigourney couldn’t do enough on offense to overcome 22-point fourth quarter deficit. The Sigourney defense stepped up to hold Montezuma to seven points in the final eight minutes but it proved to be too little, too late. The Savages trailed by just four points after the first quarter only to allow 24 points to the Braves in the second and fall behind 35-19 at the half. Freshman Logan Price led Montezuma with 17 points, while Bryan Gregson had nine points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Montezuma added to its lead in the third quarter to make a Sigourney comeback next to impossible.
