Farm Fresh Breakfast with EV FFA

Booking Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, automatically made the English Valleys’ FFA “Farmers Share of the Dollar Breakfast” on Saturday a huge success – raising over $10,000 was just the icing on the cake.

Kristen Flander’s EV Future Farmers of America organized and executed the first annual Farmers Share of the Dollar Breakfast at the high school on Saturday, charging one dollar for an all-you-can-eat breakfast including pancakes, sausage and eggs, all of which were donated from local farmers. Farmers and producers receive roughly a 15- percent share of a product’s retail cost, which is why EV’s FFA charged only one dollar for the breakfast that was valued at eight dollars.

“We’re trying to show that there’s people and families behind the product that they buy in the grocery story,” said Dakota Olson, EV’s FFA President. “What we’re trying to do is make people realize that farmers aren’t getting the dollar that they’re spending. Most of that money goes toward marketing, processing, transportation and other expenses that eat up profit.”
