Free Lunch Program Launches in Sigourney

Sigourney Community Schools and the Sigourney Ministerial Association have partnered up to provide free lunches for kids 18 and under this and next week.

The program began on Monday, June 6 and will continue to June 17. Children are provided a balanced sack lunch at no cost and no one within the age limit will be turned away. Superintendent of Sigourney Schools Dave Harper and the Ministerial Association began talks for this program back in January, with the Association providing funding for the meals that are bought through the school nutrition program.

“We saw a high need for kids to get a high nutritional lunch for various reasons,” Harper said. “Summer time is a thin time to get a meal, no fault to anyone. There’s no financial guideline to this service, because we don’t want any kids going hungry.”

Sack lunches can be picked up at Sigourney Elementary east doors from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and also at the Community Center in Delta from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. 50 kids each of the first few days have come by. Half of those are summer school students, but the others that come prove a need for this program, according to Harper.

“There’s expectation for this to grow as more people learn about our program,” Harper said.

With those expectations in mind, the program will return July 5through July 15 due to demand. Volunteers are welcome to help the free lunch program. For more information, contact Dave Harper at 641-224-2524.
