K&L Foods sold to Brothers Market

After 14 years of service to the community, K&L Foods and TNT Liquor have been sold and will be under the new ownership of Brother’s Market Corporation.

The two stores are part of a bigger co-op, Affiliated Foods Midwest. K&L communicated that they were selling the store last month, which garnered the interest of Brother’s Market, a chain store with locations in Cascade, Grundy Center, Lisbon, Parkersburg, and Denver, IA and Tonganoxie, KS.

“It was time to make a change, and we felt that Brother’s Market was the best possible company to take over our store,” Keith Luettjohann, K&L owner said. “As far as we know, they will continue to maintain things here as the same, will retain current employees and hire new employees as well.”

Brother’s Market rose from the wake of a powerful tornado that destroyed 22 businesses in Parkersburg in the spring of 2008. One of those businesses was the town’s only grocery store, and the owners did not rebuild. Brothers Jared, Jay and Darian DeVries, all graduates of Aplington-Parkersburg High School, stepped in and opened Brother’s Market a year later, providing the town once again with a grocery store. After seven years and six locations, the franchise found a new home in Sigourney.

“As I traveled through Sigourney, there was a great sense of pride about supporting local businesses,” Stockdale said. “You can see that with the city square, and how well maintained it is. This really fits what we are at Brother’s Market, and we want to be involved with this community from day one. We respect how Keith and Laurie ran K&L and we will continue to provide great services to the community.”

TNT Liquor will become Brother’s Wine and Spirit, while the greenhouse will move to H&M. Jack’s Drug Corner will remain open inside the new store, as it is a rented space and not owned by K&L or Brother’s Market. The store will kick off their grand opening with a one sale and ribeye steak dinner from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. Matt Stockdale, Director of Operations for Brothers Market, visited Sigourney last month and feels the company and community are a great fit for each other.

There will be a new weekly advertisement inThe News-Review that will feature “Brother’s Bonus Buys” deals. The store itself will feature a new sign and minor changes to the exterior and interior of the building, including new paint colors.

We are excited to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Sigourney,” Jared DeVries, owner of Brother’s Market said in a statement. “Brother’s Market is a family owned business and I see the residents of Sigourney now apart of our family.”

Keith and Laurie Luettjohann, who came to Sigourney and purchased the original store 14 years ago, will continue to own and operate H&M Farm & Home Supply Co. and live in town.

“We appreciate all that the community has done for us and we are happy to continue our work with H&M,” Keith and Laurie Luettjohann said. “We’ve built a lot of friendships in the community over the years and we aren’t going anywhere. Brothers Market is a good company and will be great for our community, which is why we sold the store to them.”
