Lady Savages lose ranked battle against Hawks

Sully – The Lady Savages were in for one of their hardest tests of the season, playing a ranked Lynnville-Sully team on the road on June 14. Sigourney entered the night ranked 15th in 1A while the Hawks were ranked 11th and the two combining for a 26-10 record. A tight battle throughout, the Lady Savages led early but couldn’t hold on, finishing with a 5-3 loss.

The good news for Sigourney was getting Hannah Lucas back in the lineup earlier in the week, despite not recording a hit against Montezuma or North Mahaska. She looked back in form against the stingy Hawks, launching her first long ball of the season to give Sigourney an early 1-0 lead. Jordan VanEe kept the inning alive with a double, but the threat ended when Kaylee Weber grounded out.

The Hawks made their strategy evident from the get-go at the plate, get aboard and advance around the bases. An infield single led to consecutive steals, followed by another infield single, steal and score. While it seemed LS was aiming to make it a long night for their visitors, the Hawks were held to the single run through four innings.

Meanwhile, the Sigourney offense steadily chugged away with every plate appearance, adding on one run in the second and third innings. Dani Richards got on base with a single and made it to second with a sacrifice bunt from Julia VanEe. Richards would end up scoring after Courtney Hemsley hit a stand-up double.
