Local Veterans Recognized in New Books at KC Historical Society

Keokuk County Historical Society recently purchased two books compiled by Larry Cuddeback and Cheyenne Miller, a father-daughter team from Washington. The books: We Lucky Few and The Three of Hearts contain stories of World War II veterans being drafted and some of their experiences while serving their country. Stories include veterans from Sigourney, Harper and Keota. Veterans mentioned are Alfred ‘Fritz’ Conrad, Craig Downing, Stibe Flander, Herb Hammes, John Wilkening, and Ruth Zear, a German civilian refugee, who became the war bride of Wayne Zear. The books can be viewed and read at the Historical Society on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
