New Sigourney High track scheduled for completion August 15

A different kind of race is taking part at the Sigourney Jr/Sr High track field this spring and summer as crews compete against the clock to finish the new all-weather track by August 15.

“We started this process in the summer of 2015 and now we’re seeing dirt turned,” Sigourney CSD Superintendent Dave Harper said. “It’s neat to watch the crew break it down and then build it up.”

Midwest Tennis and Track Co. of Denison have removed the cinder off the track and grated down the base of the track. Next the crews will put rock down for a new base, depending on weather conditions. If everything remains on schedule, the asphalt will be put down next spring/early summer and be built back up to the previous level of the track. Meanwhile, the cinder is to be repurposed for the parking lot and the north side of the building. All excess soil will be put on the south side of the softball field to level out the bank on the hill to create much needed practice space.
