Panthers streaking into Districts

The Pekin baseball team continued their torrid streak down the final stretch of the season and through the first round of District play, extending their win streak to 11 games. The most recent win came on July 7 when the Panthers beat Columbus Junction for the third time this year by a score of 18-3.

In their earlier matchups this season the Panthers had outscored CJ 27-0, averaging 10 hits per game. More of the same occurred when the two teams met up again for the first round of District play as Pekin tallied 10 team hits while only allowing CJ to six hits. After Pekin gave up an early rare run, the offense came alive in the bottom of the first by knocking in eight runs.

Columbus Junction scored twice more in the second inning and Pekin responded with 10 straight runs in the following three innings to end the game after four innings played. Keaton Baayen pitched all four innings for Pekin and limited CJ to their three runs while striking out five along the way.

The Panthers haven’t lost a game since June 11 and in that streak have outscored their opponents 134-16.

Panther leaders: Conner Reed – 3 hits, Ryan Stansberry – 4 runs, Conner Reed – 4 RBIs, Tanner Bainbridge – 2 SB, Keaton Baayen – 5 Ks

Pekin continued their District run when they played Eddyville-Blakesburg Fremont on July 9 at Iowa City Regina. The Panthers went in with a record of 17-5 while the Rockets were 16-9.
