Compared to most other high school golf teams in the area, English Valleys’ squad has spent an abundance of time out on the course. Either coach Jeff Kingland is a scheduling mastermind who can predict detailed future weather patterns, or the Bears have been (relatively) avoiding rainouts by sheer luck. Whichever the case, Kingland’s squad has been busy of late, and that could pay dividends in the postseason.

On Thursday, May 1, the Bears hosted Montezuma and picked up two wins. The girls were given the automatic win over the Braves, who brought only three golfers. Rylee Voss (49), Paige Hester (53), Sydnie Stephenson (53) and Claire Kingland (59) combined for a team score of 214. For the boys, Davis Axmear and his nine-hole round of 47 paced EV (199) past Montezuma (213). Andrew Kerkove finished with a 49, Brennen Grimm finished with a 50 and Adam Kerkove shot a 53.
