Rushing attack leads to Pekin win

The Pekin Panthers beat Montezuma in every facet of the game on Friday, Sept. 8. Pekin accumulated 383 yards, compared to 82 yards for Montezuma in a 41-0 win.

Star running back Monico Requena took on most of the workload for the Panthers. He carried the ball 14 times, finishing with 105 yards and three scores. Three other Panthers in Dayne Eckley, Torell Washington and Keaton Baayen also rushed for over 40 yards.

They each scored a touchdown, the longest coming from Eckley on a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Caleb Comstock, Pekin signal-caller, threw for 117 yards and one touchdown in the win.

The defense continued to stifle the opponent, with a host of Panthers stepping up. Three names that stood out were Skyler Juhl, Drake Harbison and Hunter Conger. They each finished the game with a tackle for loss, and Juhl assisted on six tackles.

Conger and Juhl recovered Montezuma fumbles, the two turnovers forced by Pekin. The defense limited Montezuma to 45 passing yards and 37 rushing yards. Pekin has now started the season with four straight wins.

They will be looking to continue the streak when they travel to North Mahaska on Sept. 15.
