Savages Push Past Tri-County

The South Iowa Cedar League girls’ basketball season got underway for Tri-County and its host Sigourney on Friday. A competitive game for three quarters showcased an experienced, veteran Sigourney squad and a Tri-County team made up of some talented youngsters and a solid post presence. In the end, Sigourney’s depth, trapping defense and points in the paint gave the Savages what they needed to pull away for the 50-32 win.
 
Karah Appleget got the Savages’ first points of the year with a short jumper in the lane and set the tone for the rest of the night. Appleget, along with Jordan Carter, provided early scoring for Sigourney down low to help push the Savages’ lead to 13-7 after the first quarter. The Sigourney offense continued to produce in the paint while its half-court trapping press caused problems for the Trojans. TC freshman Katlyn Little did the majority of the ball handling for the Trojans, bringing the ball up against pressure and doing her best to find the gaps in Sigourney’s press. Little and the Trojans managed to hang around for the first half and went into the locker room trailing by just eleven.
