In School Permit Testing becoming available in Keokuk County

In order to receive a drivers permit in the state of Iowa, one must simply be 14 years old and pass a permit test. What is not so simple for students in Keokuk County is finding the time to take these tests. At the Keokuk County Courthouse, the Drivers License Department operated by Trisha Black only offers its testing from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“Unfortunately, these times are during school time,” Black said. “Most parents would have to pull their child out of school for testing.”

Instead, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has created a solution Black feels helps “students, parents and schools” with the In School Permit Testing. According to Black, this new program is web-based that only requires a proctor from area schools to have the ability to provide testing for all students whenever the school wishes to.

“Once the student has passed at the school then they come to the Court house to get issued the permit, which is only a two to five minute process,” Black said. “This is much faster than testing and getting issued at the courthouse.”

Students will still need to have their license issued at the courthouse and to bring their birth certificate, social security verification and a parent along.

“In our office, we are excited about this for many reasons,” Black said. “Students sometimes do not pass of the first time, so getting them out of school multiple days to come test is no longer an issue. It also opens our testing times for the rest of the public, such as CDL testers, Motorcycle testing, and Adult permit and license testing. This is also very beneficial for the parents, they no longer have to make so many trips coming into the office.”
