Several PRs push Sigourney to fifth place at SICL meet

The Sigourney boys’ track team had several big finishes at the conference meet on May 1, many of which turned out as personal records. The Savages finished in fifth place when all the points were added up, coming just shy of fourth place.

The best finish on the day for the team was in the 1600m run with Tommy Stout taking first place with a time of 4:56.23. Shortly behind him was Mason Moore, as he has been much of the season, this time taking third place with a time of 5:15.27. Moore followed that up with a runner-up finish in the 3200m run, clocking in at 11:29.36.

The group of Carson Crawford, Kyle Weber, Tristan Bell and Stout combined for a time of 3:52.38 and took first place in the 1600m DMR. The Savages also finished in the top five in the 4x200m relay event, running a time of 1:40.28 and picking up four points. Another three top-five finishes came from the discus, high jump and shot put events.

Payton Schauf had the best throw on the day at 133’-3.00”, which was a personal record. Another personal record came from Spencer Magill who got over the 5’-10.00” mark in the high jump, which was the second-best on the day. Crawford was unable to follow the trend, coming up short of reaching his personal record in the shot put but did take third at 41’-9.00”.

“I feel like we exceeded our expectations and nearly set PR in everything,” Sigourney coach Jared Jensen said. “Everything we ran we did well in, which we didn’t expect for some of the events. A lot of kids stepped up.”

“Many of our younger guys had to learn things by themselves as they went along, since we don’t have many older guys. That bodes well for the entire athletic program when kids will compete hard,” Jensen said. “Everybody was primed and ready to roll. We wanted to finish in the top half and we knew there would be some good teams here.”

The Savages had one last meet before Districts when they competed at Montezuma on May 7.
