Sigourney and Keota Fire take part in grain bin rescue training

Sigourney Keota Fire Departments joined forces as they went through grain bin rescue training on John and Carla Dumont’s property in rural Ollie on Sunday, March 12.

“Training is imperative in the Fire Service,” Sigourney Fire Chief Bill Halleran said. “We do not practice to get it right, we practice so we do not get it wrong. Arriving on scene to a parent yelling that someone in a house is not the time to wish you paid attention in a class or training.”

Both departments take part in numerous trainings, including ice rescues, pump operations, controlled burns, self-containing breathing apparatus (SCBA) training, Haz-Mat, Fireground, and grain bin training. While Halleran isn’t sure how many calls they get a year, they come anytime and not just harvest time. Grain in these bins can act like quicksand; trapping the person and pushing them down farther if they struggle. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders will make sure the area is safe, turn off the power and gain access to the person as quick as possible through the sides or the top.
