Sigourney boys rebound with back to back wins

After losing three straight games, one of which to one of the toughest teams in the state, the Savages got back on track with back to back wins to close out the regular season. Sigourney shut out Winfield Mt Union 14-0 on July 2, then hosted Seymour on July 6 and won 11-3.

The Savages were able to bounce back from a tough loss to New London by beating Winfield Mt Union in five innings of play, scoring 14 runs and keeping WMU off the scoreboard. Sigourney put together four runs in the top of the first, two in the second and six in the third inning. The final two runs were scored in the fourth and none in the fifth inning.

Two pitchers combined to shut out WMU with neither allowing a hit. Payton Schauf tossed the first three innings, walked three and struck out four. Dustin Haines finished it out by walking one and struck out four with 32 pitches needed.

Sigourney leaders: Josh Mohr – 2 hits, Josh Mohr – 3 runs, Josh Mohr – 3 RBIs, Kyle Weber – 4 SB, Payton Schauf/Dustin Haines – 4 Ks

The pitching was effective in keeping Seymour in check a few days later while the offense kept increasing the lead throughout the game. Sigourney scored the first nine runs of the game in four innings of play, four of which came in one inning. Seymour got on the board with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth and Sigourney tacked on another two in the bottom half of the frame.

Bo Schmidt, Mohr and Nick Goad limited Seymour to five hits and one walk while striking out nine combined batters. Schmidt threw for four innings and struck out five in the process.

    Sigourney leaders: Payton Schauf – 2 hits, Josh Mohr/Cade Molyneux/Kyle Weber/Nick Goad – 2 runs, Brett Striegel – 2 RBIs, Josh Mohr – 3 SB, Bo Schmidt – 5 Ks

Sigourney traveled to Eldon on July 10 to face Cardinal in the first round of District play.
