Sigourney music students raises more than $4,000 for future trip

Sixty-five eager Sigourney music students from eighth graders to juniors took to the phones on Monday, August 29 to raise funds by selling cookie dough, cashing in $4,000 in another kind of dough.

The trip is currently scheduled for the spring of 2018, so students who will be attending took part in the 59-minute fundraiser. Beginning on Friday, August 26, students gathered names to call during the window provided to them. Family members, friends, teachers were asked to buy chocolate chip, peanut butter, or snickerdoodle cookies, or simply donate to the program’s trip. The dough was provided by Great American Fundraising and Ross Hemsley,

“This was the first year we’ve done this fundraiser, and it worked really well,” Jessica Meier, Sigourney band instructor said. “The students really tried hard, and having them all in one place made them more comfortable and try really hard.”

A destination has not even been chosen, but students are already having a blast preparing for it. Maddie Schwenke, a sophomore at Sigourney, wasn’t quite sure what to expect out of doing this fundraiser, but walked out feeling great about what she and her classmates had accomplished.

“I thought it was fun to talk to everyone on the phones,” Schwenke said. “This was my first time doing a fundraiser like this, and I was told to ‘smile when you talk’. I’m pretty sure people could see my smile over the phone and couldn’t say no to me.”

Schwenke sold 12 three pound tubes of cookie dough that night, while her classmates combined sold 666 tubes, with more to be accounted for. Many who were called said yes, or at least donated, according to Meier and Schwenke.

“Everyone I called was family, family friends, so they were really supportive,” Schwenke said. “I had one family friend I called that said no at first, but we talked for awhile and I changed their mind. A lot of people wanted to talk actually, but I only had an hour, so I politely had to cut them off.”

The students will either go to Washington D.C. or Chicago, where they will perform at a college for a clinic to prepare them for their spring music contest later. Taking in the local sights and having a bit of fun is also in the books as well. Students will also host other smaller fundraisers in the future, including a labor auction, pop can drive, and will clean out the stands of Carver-Hawkeye Arena after a basketball game.

“We used to have a lot of different fundraisers, but we had to reduce them down in recent years,” Meier said. “This new fundraiser did a great job for us, and we’ll be doing this in the future.”
