Sigourney starts slow, catches fire late

The Sigourney volleyball squad traveled to Keota on Monday, Sept. 11. It was their first match in two weeks, having beat Pekin on Aug. 29.

Things didn't start out the way Sigourney fans hoped, with Keota taking an early lead. The Savages also helped out Keota's cause, with a handful of errant serves. Sigourney couldn’t seem to find their tempo at any point, falling behind by double digits. The first set went to the Eagles 25-14.

"Game one and two everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong," said Savage coach Chris Carter. "Our serving tonight was atrocious, we've been working on serving aggressively but that didn’t happen."

The Savages began to shake off the two-week rust throughout the second set. Sigourney reduced their serving errors, but still gave some points away. Keota kept the score close by playing scrappy and tempted Sigourney to make errors. The Savages had a late spree of points, leading to a 25-23 win.

Sigourney began to reign in their serves even more, putting pressure on Keota. Neither side could get a sizeable lead on the other in the crucial set. Keota fans urged on their players to dig deep, knowing if they lost it, there was a good chance they'd lose the match. Sigourney fans knew they had momentum and could put away Keota, if they took the set.

Sigourney ended the third set with a string of points, and won 25-18, taking a one set lead.

The fourth and final set was no contest for the Lady Savages. Sigourney reeled off several points early, a deficit too great for Keota. Several kills from Brooke Waechter and Sloane Magill kept the ball on the Savage’s side of the court for most of the set. Sigourney took the final set 25-8.

"It was an ugly win, but we'll take it," Carter said. "It was huge for our confidence to take that last set. We quieted their crowd and bench and took control, that’s the way it should have been all night for us, but it wasn't."

Despite the struggles early, Sigourney caught fire when they needed to. Sloane Magill was a force near the net with 18 kills and three blocks. Waechter also kept the momentum, finishing with 16 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Leah Carter was a workhorse for Sigourney, providing 33 assists, nine kills, five digs, two blocks and one ace.

Sigourney looked to build off the recent momentum when they traveled to Belle Plaine on Thursday, Sept. 14.
