Sigourney Tops NM in Seventh

Expect about anything to occur when North Mahaska and Sigourney baseball teams meet. Sigourney coach Lee Crawford and North Mahaska’s Kevin Kelderman have had some classic baseball diamond battles over the years and Wednesday’s was no different.

Just four minutes into the game and with North Mahaska posting runners at second and third base a lightning bolt east of the diamond brought a delay. Thirty-nine minutes later the game resumed. Teams tied the game three times before Sigourney scored on a flyout in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a 6-5 South Iowa Cedar League victory.

“It was a typical Sigourney-North Mahaska, Crawford-Kelderman game,” said a grinning Crawford after the game. “We have been in several one-run games this year and the guys have been in them and they just keep playing ball.”

North Mahaska’s Blake Readshaw opened the game with a single, stole second and reached third before the delay on a wild pitch. He was able to score to put the Warhawks on top 1-0. Readshaw finished the game with two runs scored and drove in two runs.
