State experience will benefit Savages next year

Four Savages were sent to the State track meet to compete against the best of the best in the state. Those four boys were Carson Crawford, Kyle Weber, Tristan Bell and Tommy Stout who ran in that order.

Sigourney came into the State meet seeded 15th out of 24 teams in 1A. Their best time the four had run this season was 3:45.85, which they ran at Districts to qualify for State. They came up just shy of running that time again on the Blue Oval on May 18, finishing up at 3:47.88 and taking 22nd place.

“Any time you make it to State you should run a better time than you did previously. There is a lot of energy there and your guys need to use that and perform better than ever,” Sigourney coach Jared Jensen said. “I think they went out and performed well. A few things could’ve gone better for us, but they went out and did their best. At that point in the season you know everyone there is as fast as you and everyone is gunning for the rest of the field.”

Stout was the lone senior of the group to be running in his final high school appearance on the Blue Oval. The other three will return, with Crawford expecting to lead the way with the most experience.

“I think the experience in running at the State track meet is huge for those three guys that are returning,” Jensen said. “Carson has made his third trip to the Blue Oval in three years, so he was the only one coming in with experience, but Kyle and Tristan both earned that opportunity and experience this year.”

This year the Sigourney boys track team was made up primarily of underclassmen with some upperclassmen mixed in. A majority of the team will still be young, but the experience the trio will bring to the rest of the team will give Sigourney a chance at returning once again.

“There are always nerves when running your first race at State and with that out of the way, I expect those three guys to find a way back to Drake next season.
