State Glory Never Fades

Keota’s 1989 Boy’s Basketball Returned

with the Championship Hardware and Memories to Last Forever

Winning a State championship is something kids start dreaming about at a young age. For Jeff Sprouse and his Keota buddies, that dream blossomed from pickup games at the park as youngsters into reality in 1989.

“When we were all younger we’d always play at the park, and winning the championship is something that got talked about, no just by us, but by kids everywhere,” said Jeff Sprouse, a sophomore guard on Keota’s 1988-89 State championship team that finished 25-1 and beat Colo-NESCO to win it all. “Getting handed the trophy was quite surreal. It doesn’t hit you till later because it’s just chaos at the time. You wish you could’ve soaked in the moment more once it’s gone. Holding that trophy up in front of pretty much your entire town is one of the coolest moments anyone could ask for.”
