Supervisors approve budget

Sigourney- The Keokuk County Supervisors have gone through an annual formality: approving a budget. At the March 12 meeting of the Keokuk County Supervisors, the board considered action on the annual budget. The item up for consideration was the culmination of a number of meetings and presentations with the Keokuk County Supervisors, all related to budget requests from each department within the County.

A public hearing was held at the meeting on the proposed budget, however, no members of the public attended the meeting to offer any comments in favor, or against, the proposed budget. After the hearing, the board opened discussion on the budget, however none of the Supervisors offered any additional comments regarding the proposed budget. The Board ultimately approved the budget on a 2-1 vote, with Supervisor Deke Wood voting no.

The board also considered approval of the FY2020 elected official compensation resolution. The board is required to approve a resolution relating to compensation of all the countywide elected officials. A recommendation typically comes from the compensation commission, and the board then is legally able to vote to accept the recommendation or reduce it. The board cannot, however, increase the recommendation. The board initially considered action on the compensation at the start of the year, however after discussion, deferred action to a later date. In a similar move, after little discussion, the board voted 2-1 to adopt the elected official compensation resolution. Supervisor Deke Wood voted no.
