Tri-County comes up empty at North Mahaska tournament

The Trojans volleyball squad was searching for answers when they competed in a tournament at North Mahaska on Saturday, Sept. 16. To make matters worse, in their previous match on Thursday, Emma Miover and Taylor Dowd both came out with injuries.

Mivoer sat out on Saturday while Dowd managed to play, but not at 100 percent.

"Without them, I had to adjust my rotation," said Trojans coach Sydney Davis. "The rest of the team did a great job of adjusting, some of the girls playing positions they normally don't."

The first opponent for Tri-County was host North Mahaska. Tri-County couldn't get their offense going and eventually lost in two sets, 21-11, 21-14. Tri-County played out of sorts, but did have all 13 serves go over the net, Miranda Little responsible for five of them.

"Even though we tried our best, you could definitely tell it wasn't the same," Davis said.

Things didn't get any easier with Waco on deck. The Trojans did possess the ball for longer periods of time, and saw some more success at the net in their second match. Waco proved to be too much, sweeping Tri-County 21-10, 21-15. Myrissa Garber had five kills, two assists and one dig. Reace Thomas led the team with two aces on four service attempts.

"We tend to play sluggish at tournaments, and that's unacceptable," Davis said.

The Trojans ended the day by playing PCM-Monroe, with a similar result. Monroe finished the match winning in two sets, 21-10, 21-11. Though Tri-County couldn't get their offense going, they kept in the game with longer rallies by keeping the ball alive. The team finished with 10 digs, three coming off the hands of Sadie Little and Mikayla Hoover. Garber chipped in with two assists, one dig, one kill and one ace.

The Trojans had a short turnaround before playing at Keota on Monday, Sept. 18.
