Tri County students selected for Health Care Exploration Academy

Four Tri County students this summer will be taking part in the Health Care Exploration Academy, a program through Indian Hills Community College for sophomores or juniors interested in a health career.

Zoey Ogden, Katlyn Little, Nikayla Dowd and Myrissa Garber were all invited to this academy, beginning July 25-28. These students will stay in the dorms at Indian Hills and attend classes at the college, providing them first hand experience. They will also be taking tours of hospitals in Iowa City, Des Moines and Kirksville, MO in August and college visits when school is back in session.

25 high school sophomores and juniors from the area were selected by completing an essay on why they wanted to be selected, their health care knowledge, and other criteria. For Myrissa Garber, it’s about getting a foot in the door before even graduating from high school.

“I’m ready to see what this field of work is all about,” Garber said. “You hear about what goes on, but this academy gives me a chance to experience it hands-on.”

The focus of the academy is to careers in health care, provide assistance and guidance with planning for college, and expose students to the procedures and equipment used in the field. Participants will also receive three college credits. More information about the Health Care Exploration Academy can be found at indianhills.edu/news/events/healthacademy.html.
