Wrestling Showcased in Thornburg

The environment was a great one on Saturday at the Tri-County/Montezuma Invitational in Thornburg. 14 teams from all across Eastern Iowa met on the mats in the Tri-County gymnasium and put on a showcase for Iowa high school wrestling.
 
Before the matches even began, a special scene unfolded due in part to a glitch in the gym’s speaker system. With no sound to play the National Anthem and a gymnasium filled with awkward silence, TCM head coach Scott Edmundson and his wrestlers broke the ice and started singing. Soon, everyone in the gym joined in and created a special moment that set the tone for the day.
 
Edmundson and his team did more than just come up clutch to save the National Anthem; they came up clutch on the mat.
 
TCM put together an impressive showing Saturday that included four third-place finishes and a second-place on its way to a team fourth. Ryan Maschmann led TCM’s scoring barrage by placing second at 132 pounds. Maschmann took advantage of the watered down weight class and immediately earned a trip to the finals with a quick pin over West Branch’s Adam O’Neil. In the finals, Maschmann couldn’t get it done though, as Iowa Valley’s Drake Healey caught him with a pin late in the first period.
