KEOKUK COUNTY – A massive blizzard hit the midwest last week, covering Iowa in a thick blanket of snow. The blizzard began on the night of Monday, Jan. 8, and continued all day Tuesday. Most of Keokuk County received more than a foot of snow, forcing schools to close down on Tuesday and Wednesday. The City of Sigourney declared a Snow Emergency that lasted until Wednesday.

Wednesday was sunny, although parts of the county received a few inches of snow after sunset. The snow returned late Thursday evening and continued through Friday, with the county receiving an additional foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service, forcing schools and many businesses to close on Friday and preventing many residents from leaving their homes over the weekend. Sigourney again declared a Snow Emergency, lasting until Saturday. Most schools opened again on Monday, although Pekin remained closed. Fortunately, the National Weather Service predicts low chances of snow throughout the next week.
