SIGOURNEY—The Sigourney Savages hosted the Moulton-Udell Eagles on February 9 for the first round of the Class 1A-Region 8 bracket. The Savages stomped the Eagles by a final score of 64-12.

The Savages came out the gate ready to play. In the first quarter, the Savages scored 34 points offensively, while holding the Eagles to only one point. By halftime, the Savages pushed their lead to 49-3. The Savages kept the momentum in the second half by out-scoring the Eagles 15-9 en route to the 64-12.

The Savages had four players hit the double digit mark for points on the night: Carly Goodwin, Josephine Moore, Rain Barthelman and Erin Dawson. Rain Barthelman led the team with 13 points, while the rest were the second leading scorers with 12 apiece. Moore was active on the offensive glass for the Savages with five offensive rebounds. Carly Goowin was the main facilitator with five assists.

As a team, the Savages forced the Eagles to turn the ball over 42 times, while accumulating 27 steals throughout the course of the game. Carly Goodwin had active hands all night, as she amassed nine steals. The Savages defense held the Eagles offense to a shooting percentage of 22.2%. The defense held the Eagles below double digits points until late in the fourth quarter.

Sigourney head coach Schay Moore described how pleased she was with her defensive effort in the first half, especially the press. She went on to note, “I thought our defense got a little sloppy in the second half, but nothing we can’t fix.

Coach Moore described the feeling of being able to get a win in the first round of the postseason tournament with, “Everybody starts the tournament 0-0, and we knew we had to come ready to play.”

Lastly, coach Moore went on to describe her attack plan for the second round against North Mahaska with, “They like to press, so the big thing is we have to attack their press and play like we have nothing to lose.”

The Savages advance to the second round of the Class 1A-Region 8 bracket, where they will visit the North Mahaska Warhawks, who are currently ranked 13th in Class 1A.
