SIGOURNEY—On December 4, the SK boys and girls wrestling teams hosted a quad with North Mahaska, Iowa Valley and Mount Pleasant.

Both teams secured wins over Mount Pleasant, but were unable to secure victories in the matches against North Mahaska and Iowa Valley.

SK senior Jake Moore (165) swept all three of his opponents, and pushed his individual record to 14-4. Moore pinned his Mount Pleasant and North Mahaska counterparts, and won by a 7-4 decision over Ian Smith of Iowa Valley

SK Head Coach Corey VandenHueval used one word to describe Moore, “solid.”

Coach VandenHueval went on to describe his choice of words with, “Every single night you get solid. The couple losses he had were against very high ranked guys, guys we hope to see again in the state tournament.”

Junior Brady Clark (138) finished the night with a 1-2 record with his sole win coming via pin against Jefferson Ramirez Avalos of Mount Pleasant.

Junior Zach Guffey (285) and sophomore Jacob Libe (150) both went 2-1 in their matches. Guffey secured two pins against North Mahaska and Mount Pleasant. Libe won both his matches by decision. The first being a 8-4 victory over Gage Rise of North Mahaska and the second was a 9-3 win over Ramzy Davis of Mount Pleasant.

Other boys wrestlers to secure a win on the night were freshman Rex Flynn (120), sophomore Owen Menke (190) and junior Kaen Kopp (175).

According to Coach VandenHueval, “there are definitely some good things, and other things we need to clean up as a team. Cleaning those things up will be a team effort, coaches and athletes. It’s about five weeks out (from the state meet), so we don’t have much time. It is time to put our nose to the grindstone.”

SK junior Reanah Utterback (115) pushed her overall record to 26-0 with a pin over Paris Phosy of Mount Pleasant in 1:32.

Senior Lana Thomas (120) secured the other pin in the Cobras 12-6 victory over Mount Pleasant.

The SK girls wrestling team returns to action on December 5, when they participated in the Ottumwa Invitational.

The SK boys team will participate in the Ottumwa Invitational, but the boys tournament takes place on December 6.
