Three Savage Youth Wrestlers Place in State

DES MOINES—On February 25 and 26, the Savage Youth wrestling team made the trip to the Wells Fargo Center, as 11 Savage wrestlers qualified for the state meet.

There were three 3rd and 4th grade boys that made the trip: (54) Ryker Meyers, (70) Rhett Van Den Huevel and (86) Lucas Menke. Six 5th and 6th grade boys secured spots: (60) Xander Meyers, (78) Gamble Fry, (98) Ryker Van Den Hueval, (103) Luke Flynn, (128) Max Peterson and (138) Aven Chitwood. Lastly for the boys, there was one 7th and 8th grade boy that participated in the state tournament: (115) Dillon Menke. There was one Savage girl who made the trip down to Des Moines for the 3rd and 4th grade team: (82) Berkly Moore.  

Of the 11 wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament, the Savages had three athletes place: Berkly Moore-5th, Ryker Van Den Hueval-6th and Aven Chitwood-7th. 

Ryker Van Den Hueval spoke on the experience with, “It’s fun being at state winning matches, but it’s even better when your friends are winning matches as well.”

Coach Zech Boender expressed how the weekend went with, “It was a great experience for the youth wrestlers to be here. They all came to wrestle, and everyone wrestled well. They are a great group of kids that came to practice ready to wrestle and learn. Thank you to all the coaches that put their time into coming and coaching this year.”
